When Your Child Is Bullied

One Scared Boy

Evan was afraid to go to school. He knew Nick would be waiting. Although Evan was about twice Nick’s size, his gentle heart was no match for Nick’s constant harassing. Nick loved to jump on Evan when he wasn’t looking. He enjoyed knocking Evan’s books out of his hands. And Nick seemed to get a special thrill when his name-calling would make Evan tear up.

“You’re a big kid,” the school counselor told Evan. “Don’t be afraid of Nick.” But Evan was scared.

“My dad’s got a gun,” Nick whispered to Evan one day as he left school.

Yes … Evan was very scared.

Television and movies have long played — often humorously — on the bullying experiences that many of us faced growing up. But we know that this topic is anything but humorous.
