Teaching Kids to Be Kind

It happens often, whether we see it or not. Our child mocks or ridicules someone, or another child picks on our own. Many such encounters take place at school. Children talk back to teachers and are unkind to classmates.

President George Bush has said to parents, “You have a responsibility to make sure your child comes to school with the understanding that they’re going to be polite when they get in the classroom, … that they’ll treat their teacher with respect; [that] … certain manners are important.”

If you receive a note from school that your child has been unkind, insist that your child apologize to the teacher or the student. It may be a hard lesson, but it will sensitize your child to the importance of kindness. You can also support teachers’ efforts to teach kindness.

Of course, the need for kindness doesn’t end when the afternoon school bell rings. There are steps we can take to help children
