'Won't You Be My Neighbor?"

Have you ever watched old TV dramas that show moms talking in the backyard while all their children play ball together? In the 21st century, we’ve moved far from that idyllic picture.

Reaching out to others who live near you sets a positive example for your children to follow.

We often find there’s little time to get to know our neighbors as we rush to take our children to gymnastics or pick them up from school. Because we can easily get from place to place, we make friends through common interests, not common ground.

Though we may feel it’s not that important to know those who live around us, there are some advantages to having friends next door. A neighbor who can keep an eye on your dog while you’re on vacation will make your life a lot easier. So will the friend who calls the police if he sees a suspicious person loitering near your house.

More important, reaching out to others who live near you sets a positive example for your children to follow. Being a good neighbor will make your neighborhood a better place for you and your children to live.

• Investigate ideas for getting to know neighbors and making friends on your block.

• Take a quiz to discover what kind of neighbor you are.
