Helping Your Child Value Others

Behavior Worth Reinforcing

It can be difficult for children to take their eyes off of their own circumstances and, instead, consider the welfare of someone else. Therefore, when you see your children acting magnanimously, be sure to reward that behavior. Let your children know when you notice them showing value to others on their own initiative.

• “I saw how you shared your toy. That makes me so happy.”

• “That was a very polite way of asking for dessert. I think you deserve an extra scoop of ice cream.”

• “You waited so patiently for your turn. That’s a real grown-up thing to do!”

Tell your children that God sees their acts of kindness even when Mom and Dad don’t — and He appreciates good deeds most of all.
