Unit 6 — Heaven Bound

Lesson 2 — Salvation and repentance are inseparable.

Introduction — When God saves us, His gift of grace gives us a new heart. The more we understand the mercy and love He's shown us, the more we'll want to be like Jesus. We are compelled to do an about-face (i.e. to repent) and start living in a new way that reflects His heart, according to His wishes.

That’s where “works” come in. We aren’t saved by doing good works. But we certainly will do good works if we are truly saved.

We’ve got to teach our kids about right and wrong. We’ve got to discuss what that means in specific situations they will face at school or at home. But then we need to remind them that they can’t be good people just because they decide to. We all need a lot of supernatural help. (That’s the lesson for next week.)

Here's the Activity:

Pray
Thank God for sending His Son into the world to save us from our sins.

Appetizer
Get out family baby pictures and bring them to the table. Ask:

  • When were you born?

  • Where were you born?

  • What did you weight at birth?

Main Course
Tell each child one special thing about when she was a baby. Why are babies so special? Why do they need to be taken care of? What would happen if babies did not grow up?

There was a man in the Bible named Nicodemus who was talking to Jesus one night. Jesus told him he had to be born again to see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus was confused. He thought he had to become a baby again (John 3:1-6). What do you think Jesus meant?

Table Talk

  • How is becoming a Christian like being a baby?

  • How can new Christians grow spiritually?

  • When do Christians stop growing? When should they stop?

  • How old are you spiritually? Compare that to physical age. What would you be? A newborn? A toddler? A teenager? Why?

Vitamins and Minerals
"Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved" (Acts 16:31, NIV).

If your child would like to be “born again” and become part of God’s family, help him pray the prayer below, asking Jesus into his life.

Dear God,
I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died and rose from the dead so I could be forgiven of my sins and live forever in heaven. Please come into my life and be my Savior. Thank You for loving me and being my heavenly Father. Amen.

Coming Next Week:
We are not alone. The Holy Spirit is with us to guide and help us overcome sin.
