Unit 3 — The Bible
Lesson 2 It teaches us about God, ourselves and the world.
Introduction — "All the world's a stage," but it's not easy to figure out what role each of
us is meant to play. In fact, it's tough even to grasp the overall plot without
having some sort of guide. Why do people seem so good and so bad at the same
time? Why is this life so full of joy one second and inexplicable tragedy the
next? And what is the point of it all if there is no life beyond this one?
These are some of the big questions that the Bible answers very well, so that
when you read it, a lot of things begin to fall into place. It's not an encyclopedia
or a book of scientific facts, but it tells us everything we really need to
know about the what and why of our existence.
Teach your kids where to look for the key that's behind all other learning.
Here's the Activity:
What you need:
Paper, pencils and a Bible
What you do:
As a family, go through the following exercise.
What are some of your most valuable possessions?

Look over your list. What do you have on it? Maybe you have an important video
game or a book or a doll your grandmother gave you. Different things are important
to different people. Your most valuable possession might be worth a whole lot
of money. But that’s not always the case. Maybe your most valuable possession
has a lot of value because of who gave it to you or how you got it.
Is the Bible on your list? It’s valuable in a lot of ways. It’s
worth a ton of money. People in some countries would give everything they have
to own a Bible. Other people risk their lives to sneak Bibles to them. God’s
Word is also valuable because of who gave it to you—God himself. God inspired
every word in the Bible. It’s the perfect gift from the perfect Savior.
However, a lot of the time it’s easy to look at the Bible like any old
book. But it’s much more than that.
Check out Psalm 19:9-10.
These verses say the rules God gives you in the Bible are valuable. They are
more precious and desirable than gold. And His Word is also sweet—sweeter
than honey. You can enjoy it!
I believe . . .
the Bible is precious and sweet.
It’s kind of funny to compare a book to candy or money. But that’s
exactly what King David did in the above verses. Maybe King David had gone nutty
from hiding and fighting too much?
Got your Bible handy? (Hopefully, you have it opened up right next to you because
you just looked up those verses.) Good. Now lick the cover. Just kidding. But
if you did, it probably wouldn’t taste sweeter than honey. And if you
took it to a store, you most likely couldn’t buy a skateboard with it,
even though it’s worth more than gold.
Open up God’s Word, savor what He’s saying to you and look for
ways to “spend” that knowledge every day. You’ll find out
that King David was right.
Pray.
Ask God to help you treat His Word like a precious gift.
