Unit 2 — Who Am I?
Lesson 4 We are accountable for choosing between good an evil.
Introduction — Excuses, excuses. We all make excuses. When we do something
bad, we blame our friend or say we were just too tired that day. But God says
phooey on that. We must take the blame for the evil that is in us.
Tell your children the truth: Being a kid doesn't let them off the hook. They
know when they're being mean to someone. They may not be as smart as the pastor
of your church, but they still know right and wrong.
So we're all in trouble, aren't we? Wait and see what God has done about that.
Here's the Activity:
Read the following with the entire family.
Choices — the choices you make say a lot about who you are. They show other
people what's important to you.
-
Your teacher makes a mistake and records an A in the grade book when you
scored a B. Do you take the better grade or tell her about the mistake?
-
Your little sister runs into the living room, accidentally trips on the
rug and crushes your favorite video. Do you scream at her until she cries
or forgive her and make her feel better?
-
Your dog escapes from the back yard and makes a mess in your neighbor's
lawn. Do you sneak your dog back to your house and hope your neighbor never
finds out who did it, or do you clean up your neighbor's yard?
As you read the above choices, you knew the correct answers, right? But maybe
the other options didn't sound too bad either. Temptations are like the wrong
answers, and they happen all the time. God knows you will be tested. Living
God's way comes down to making good choices.
Now read James 1:12-14 and discuss the following points.
These verses say that God gives the crown of life to people who endure testing.
God is never tempted to do wrong, and He doesn't tempt anyone either.
I believe . . .
1.) When I overcome temptations, my faith grows stronger.
You will be tempted. Every day you have a lot of decisions to make. You can
choose correctly or make bad choices. It's up to you. When you make good choices,
you develop positive habits. You grow stronger in your faith and learn to stick
with God. And when you continue to make the right choices day after day, you
become a more grown-up Christian.
2.) I become more like Jesus by imitating His actions and doing the right
things.
These are some qualities about Jesus that I want people to see in me:

Next time you feel tempted to make a bad decision, think about Jesus and the
characteristics He wants you to develop. Then try to make the right choice.
Pray. Ask God to help you become more like Him.
