Unit 2 — Who Am I?
Lesson 3 We tend toward evil.
Introduction — Here are some things that your kids will likely admit to be true:
Every one of us has friends and family members whom we love. We sometimes act unselfishly to help one of these people. We even give them gifts. But most of the time, the person we care about the most is little ole ME!
We are selfish. We want to have a good life and enjoy lots of good things. We want to do whatever we wish and not have to obey someone else, including God. We don’t want to give up something so that another person gets ahead of us. We want everyone to admire us and put us first. So we get angry and greedy and mean.
Since everyone tends to act this way at one time or another, our world is full of hurt. You can see it at school, at home and in the news.
Here's the Activity:
Listen:
Find the purple Adventures in Odyssey FaithLaunch CD that came with your March (Discovery) or May (Tween) audio journal and listen to "Promises, Promises" with your children, or listen online.
Quick Sum:
When Connie makes an enormous list of New Year's resolutions, she learns an important lesson about the foolishness of making promises you can't keep-even if you make them to yourself.
Fast Ask:
-
Why did Connie fail to keep her promise?
-
During the episode Connie says, "People are basically good." Why is she
wrong?
-
Read Matthew 5:33-37. What does Jesus say about making promises?
Memory Verse:
"All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one
who does good, not even one." (Romans 3:12, NKJV)
