Unit 2 — Who Am I?

Lesson 1 — We are spiritual beings made in God's Image

Introduction

What is God like? Though there is only one God and Creator, He is made up of three persons who relate to one another in love. What makes us similar to Him is that we, too, are made to know and love others. Most important, we are made to know God.

Sure, our dogs and cats relate to one another and to us. But not really in the way that we humans can.

  • We can think about faraway or complex matters.
  • We can see things about each other that aren’t visible to the eye, and
  • We were made to be able to talk to and listen to God directly.

It’s as though we each have a walkie-talkie built into our minds and hearts, able to hear distant messages from heaven and to respond.

It’s important that your kids grasp this reality about human beings.

Here's the Activity:

What you need
You’ll need clay or Play-Doh and a Bible. If you like, you can also provide rolling pins, cookie cutters or plastic knives.

What you do
Use the clay to make a sculpture that looks as much like you as possible. Give everyone plenty of time to model his own image. When all the sculptures are finished, take a few minutes to admire and compliment each other’s work.

What you share
Read Genesis 1:24-27. Share how this activity makes you think of God forming the first human beings.

What you ask:

Q. How is your sculpture like and unlike the real you?

Q. What does it mean to be created in someone’s image?

A. To look like someone and to act like that person in certain ways.

Q. We tried to make sculptures of our own images. How is this similar to when God created Adam and Eve in His image?

A. He formed us to think, react, love, enjoy and maybe even look like Him.

In your discussion, bring out ways we are like God:

  1. People were created with a mind. Our brains give us the abilities to think and learn. Our minds are different from those of animals, which God gave us the responsibility of ruling. We were created higher than the animals and have the ability to understand and communicate with God.
  2. People were created with a soul. This is also sometimes referred to as a “heart.” We have our physical hearts, the muscle that pumps blood through our bodies, but we also have a soul. This is what makes you unique, what makes you an individual! This is what makes you able to have a relationship with God. Trees can’t relate to God. Houseflies can’t relate to God. But you can!
  3. People were created with a will. This means we can choose to do things God’s way or our own way. When we do things that are not God’s way, we are sinning.
