The Power of Teachable Moments
Use Teachable Moments to Affirm
Teachable moments are not only for instruction about biblical truth, but they
can also be used to affirm and encourage your children. I tell this story as an
illustration of how to use a teachable moment to build up your child:
I couldn’t resist using the moment to remind her that Jesus cherishes her.

My daughter, Danielle, loves to watch Antiques Road Show, and I confess
there’s a certain suspense when someone brings in say, an old German porcelain
doll, and the appraiser’s eyes bulge when he recognizes the signature
mark left by the manufacturer. Then he calmly describes the condition of the
doll, gives the history, compliments the lace dress and then — the moment
we’ve been waiting for — declares the value!
Sometimes it’s in the thousands; sometimes it’s as low as 25 dollars.
But whatever the price estimate, it is satisfying to have a concrete answer,
an end to the suspense.
One night after watching the program, I was just about to send Danielle to
brush her teeth. Just then a truth hit me. “Hey,” I said, “if
you were on Antiques Road Show and Jesus were the appraiser, how much
would He say you’re worth?”
Her face flashed a smile of happiness and confidence. “I’m priceless!”
An easy question with no real suspense, no surprise. But I couldn’t resist
using the moment to remind her in a unique way that Jesus cherishes her.
