Nurturing Your Child’s Spirit

Other Traditions

Traditions connect the past with the present, pass on the influences from other generations and bond us together relationally, emotionally and spiritually.

Traditions are more than just celebrating Christmas and Easter. Each special day can be one in which you nurture your child’s spirit through a prayer, Scripture reading or special lesson by simply incorporating spiritual elements into the celebration.

How about establishing traditions regarding:

  • Birthdays
  • First day of school
  • Losing a tooth
  • A personal commitment to faith, baptism, communion, etc.
  • Recitals/sports finals
  • Becoming a teenager
  • Learning to drive
  • The first date

Special days you may want to celebrate with traditions:

  • New Year’s
  • Valentine’s Day
  • Presidents Day
  • Mother’s/ Father’s Day
  • Memorial Day/Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving

A tradition can be anything from a prayer to a special meal. It can be a special gift or a symbolic ceremony. It can also be giving a simple card or taking a major trip. Whatever you choose to do, you are telling your child that you care — about the past, the present and the future.
