The Princess Bride Talking Points
-
What is Westley’s attitude toward Buttercup at the beginning? How
does his consistent service change her contempt for him into sincere affection?
Read Matthew 20:28, Luke 22:26 and Galatians 5:13-14.
-
What in Westley's attitude makes him a hero? What does he have in common
with heroes from other favorite stories, including Bible stories (Samson,
David or Daniel)? For teen girls, recall conquests of Deborah or Esther
(see Judges 4 and the book of Esther).
-
Read Proverbs 8:13, 11:2 and 16:18. How does Humperdinck’s arrogance
set him up for defeat?
Follow-Up Activity
- Inigo and Fezzik may start out as mercenaries, but at least they show honorable
tendencies. Teens raised in an age of terrorism and video games have little
concept of "just war" and treating enemies with dignity. The originator
of "Just War Theory" was St. Thomas Aquinas, a devout Christian
and great thinker of the early church. The funny fight scenes from this film
may provide an opportunity to talk about biblical principles for fighting
fair.
For a more academic understanding of Just War Theory, refer to the Internet
Encyclopedia of Philosophy at www.utm.edu/research/iep/j/justwar.htm, or pick
up the Summa Theologicae for more about Aquinas’s time-honored
philosophy.
Just for Fun
Have you ever watched a movie and recognized a familiar voice, but had a hard
time putting your finger on where you heard it before? You may get that sense
when listening to Wallace Shawn, the actor who plays Vizzini. His voice is probably
best known in connection with a computer-animated Disney character. A pal to
Buzz and Woody, his moment of triumph in Toy Story 2 finds him shouting,
"I did it. I finally defeated Zurg!"
