Movie Night With Your Teens
Fiddler on the Roof Talking Points
-
Yente says, “Even the worst husband is better than no husband.”
Do you agree? Share Paul’s statements about singleness and marriage
in 1 Corinthians 7.
-
Which character in the movie do you most admire? Why? Discuss the symbolic
significance of the fiddler, who both opens and closes the film.
-
Do you think Tevye did the right thing in giving his blessing to the marriages
of Tzeitel and Hodel, even though they violated tradition? Was it right
to withhold his blessing from Chava, who married outside the faith? Read
Deuteronomy 7:3-4 and 2 Corinthians 6:14-18?
Follow-Up Activity
-
Fiddler on the Roof began as a stage play before it was made into a movie,
and it is still performed by high school, college and professionals. If
your teen enjoyed the film, try to find a live performance that you can
attend together. Compare the versions.

Pick up a copy of Marvin Wilson’s book, Our Father Abraham, which
helps Christians understand their Jewish roots. Or visit the Web site for
Chosen People Ministries (www.chosenpeople.com), an organization of Jewish
and Gentile believers who celebrate Hebrew tradition and Jesus as Messiah.
Just for Fun
If you think this film is too “corny,” you’re right. The Russian
farmers are shown with freshly harvested corn, which is an American crop not
grown in Russia 100 years ago. Oops!
