Building Memories in Your Single-Parent Family Home

The Sounds of Home

No matter where we live, there are certain sounds that have become familiar. Maybe there is a train that passes in the distance, birds that sing out our window every morning, lawn-mowers with a certain tenor to their engine. These sounds come to remind us of home.

In addition to the natural sounds of our neighborhoods, we can enhance the music of life by bringing beautiful sounds into our home environment. As single parents, any added touch of home that we can include, helps. A simple ticking clock can bring a child back to the grandfather clock that once hung in their living room. Sounds elicit memories, and here are a few ways to enhance the memory-making sounds in your home:

We can enhance the music of life.

Tie one on. Tie a bell or string of bells to your entrance doorknob with a pretty piece of ribbon. The welcoming jingle will become a familiar greeting to loved ones stepping inside.

Serve foods that sound scrumptious. Try crispy chips, crunchy vegetables, popping corn or sizzling steaks. Pleasant-sounding foods enhance the satisfaction and memory of a meal.

Say pretty please. Set a good example for your children by using the word “please” as a part of your everyday vocabulary. “Please” softens a statement by turning it into a respectful request.

Tick, tock. Place a beautiful clock with pleasant-sounding chimes in a prominent spot in your home. The familiar sound will ring “home” every time it strikes.

Have a “get-well bell.” Spoil a sick child with a designated get-well bell beside the bed. Whenever he or she needs something, a simple ring will let you know. This soothing sound and a little TLC is sure to help cure any mild illness.
