Building Memories in Your Single-Parent Family Home

Taste and See

Chicken Divan. That is what Elsa’s mom made for her every birthday at her request. “Please Mom, please?” Even now, when Elsa takes a bite of Chicken Divan, she feels an overwhelming urge to sing herself “Happy Birthday.” The taste reminds her of celebration, fun and love. As a single mother, she longs to create the same tasty memories for her daughter, “I want her to remember a home where she was celebrated as well.”

Here are some simple ways to create great memories for your children, memories that will linger so that when they stumble across a similar taste in their adulthood, they will smile and think of home.

Celebrate the seasons. To know what is in season, look for what is plentiful, healthy looking and reasonably priced. Cool months call for hot apple cider, pot roast, citrus fruits or vegetable soup. Warmer months welcome fresh lemonade, corn on the cob, melons or sliced tomatoes.

Create tasty memories.

Make it better with butter. Butter always adds a burst of rich flavor. For a terrific taste, flavor butter by sprinkling jalapeño, onion, black pepper, basil and parsley onto a stick of softened butter. Mix all the ingredients together, roll them into a log, wrap and freeze for use on broiled meats and fish or to stir into vegetables or pastas.

Go nuts! Enhance salads with a handful of nuts or sunflower seeds. Try walnuts, pecans, almonds or peanuts, toasting them lightly to bring out their flavor. If you don’t have young children in your home, place a wooden bowl filled with different sizes, shapes and flavors of nuts in your living room. Leave a nutcracker and a pick in the bowl so family and friends can help themselves.

Top off your hot chocolate. Enhance a steamy mug of hot chocolate with a tasty swirl of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar or chocolate shavings. At Christmas, add a candy cane stir stick. For a cool hot chocolate sundae, add a small scoop of vanilla or chocolate ice cream and top it with small marshmallows, sprinkles and a maraschino cherry.
