Hook Your Kids on Fishing
Take Care of the Results
So you’ve caught a fish. Now what? There are two options. If it is legal (in type and size), you can keep the fish and eat it for dinner. Or you can let it go.
Keeping the fish requires cleaning and cooking. Cleaning is as simple as cutting the fish along the belly and removing everything from inside, then washing it with clean water. Some fish require scraping the scales off with a sharp knife.
Your second option is to let the fish go. That keeps the fish in the water to live (and perhaps be caught) another day. This is a great option if the fish is too small, is a rare species or is a wild fish (as opposed to a “stocked” fish).
If you want to release the fish, try to keep it in the water and wet your hands before touching it. Gently remove the hook and revive the fish by moving it back and forth in the water (so water can pass through the gills). Cradle it until it can swim again.
If the fish has swallowed the hook, just cut the line as close as you can and it will dissolve over time. When releasing a fish, take your time. Some fish swim right off; others need a while to recover.
