Hook Your Kids on Fishing

Find a Place to Go

Finding the ideal place to fish can seem daunting. It’s not really that hard, though, if you know what to look for. The first part is easy, since fish live in water. That means you can eliminate cliff faces and cornfields.

So, what sort of water is near you? Rivers, streams, lakes or the ocean? You’ll fish differently in each type of water. Basically, in rivers and streams you want your bait to move with the water. This technique will require more effort from you and the kids. In lakes, you can cast your line into a likely area and let it sit for a while.

You probably know someone who likes to fish. Go sweat information out of him. If you have to, use your little ones as leverage. Tell him you want to show your kids a good time and that for the sake of all that is good, he should tell you about his favorite fishing hole. You may have to use a healthy dose of guilt to get him to divulge it, but persistence often pays off.

Here’s an often missed secret to finding a good location to fish. Go to the website for your state department of wildlife (or fish and game service — the names vary by state) and find out where the fishing hot spots are in your area.

Many states raise and “stock” fish in ponds and lakes just for people to catch. They may also release a “stocking report” that tells you where they have recently placed fish. Ponds that have recently been stocked are ideal locations for families with young children to catch some fish.

While you’re on the website, check licensing requirements for your state. Adults typically need to purchase a license, while kids usually do not.

Once you get to a good location, you’ll also need to know where to find the fish that are there.
