What Are the 40 Developmental Assets™ ?

Research on over 2 million youth by Search InstituteSM has identified 40 positive qualities and experiences called Developmental Assets. These have a tremendous influence on young people’s lives.

Here’s a sample of the assets:

  • Positive family communication. Young person and parent(s) communicate positively. Young person is willing to seek advice and council from parent(s).

  • Mentors. Young person receives support from three or more adults in addition to parents.

  • Religious Community. Young person spends one or more hours per week in activities in a religious institution.

  • Youth as resources. Young people are given useful roles in the community.

  • Creative activities. Young person spends three or more hours per week in lessons or practice in music, theater or others arts.

  • Honesty. Young person tells the truth, even when it is not easy.

  • Restraint. Young person believes it is important not to be sexually active or to use alcohol or other drugs.

  • Responsibility. Young person accepts and takes personal responsibility.

  • Resistance skills. Young person can resist negative peer pressure and dangerous situations.

These websites will also show the percentages of youth who experience each asset. Some assets are becoming rare today:

  • Only 20% of youth spend significant time in music and arts, and just 23% read for pleasure.

Some assets are at high levels:

  • 70% of youth surveyed feel that their family provides high love and support, and 74% are optimistic about their future.
