Raising Successful Kids
What do your children need
to succeed in this world?
The Search InstituteSM looked for answers to that question by surveying more
than 2 million youth. Researchers were looking for these kids’ “assets”
— factors that contribute to success in life.
The results?
-
Search found a total
of 40 assets that are like puzzle
pieces in the lives of young people.
-
Youth who are rich in
these assets tend to thrive, enjoying better health and academic success.
-
Asset-rich youth are
also safer from the dangers of alcohol, drugs, violence and sexual involvement.
You can find the stats in “What’s
So Powerful About the Assets?”
The assets approach is powerful because it focuses on practical solutions,
not just on problems. It helps youth and their parents, schools and youth leaders
build one asset at a time. You can
add some assets quickly. Before long the assets will add up to a picture of
success.
Yes, parents are using the asset research to give their own kids a leg up for
success. More than that, some are also using it to reach out to community parents
and become heroes to parents in their
schools.
Brenda was one of those parents looking for help when a team from a church
brought an asset-based parenting outreach to her school. Her motivation? Brenda
knows what’s at stake in raising children. She is a prison guard supervising
some of the most notorious murderers in America. Joining in the parenting group,
her skills and confidence flourished as she helped her children add valuable
assets. She then joined the parent outreach
team and is now mentoring other parents.
