According to respected teachers of faith down through the ages, there is no one “right” way to pray. Many people find it helpful to sit and close their eyes when they pray. Others prefer to stand and look up toward heaven. Prayer is simply talking with God. So when you pray, reverently yet freely tell God what’s on your heart.
Here is a suggested prayer you can adapt and use, if you desire:
Dear God in heaven,
Thank you so much that you have blessed me with my child. Thank you that
you love my child and want the best for him/her. I love my child and
want the best for him/her, as well. Please help me to raise my son/daughter
to be an outstanding young man/woman who loves you, loves other people,
and is dearly loved by his/her family and friends.
In the days ahead, please protect my son/daughter from harm. Please put your angels around him/her to guard him/her and keep him/her from evil. Please give me insight and wisdom on how to limit his/her exposure to the negative influences in our society. And please help me to nurture positive character qualities in his/her heart and life.
When my child is hurt by others, please give me an abundant measure of peace, compassion, strength, grace and wisdom to talk about this with my son/daughter. Help me to sense in my own heart whenever he/she has been wounded.
Please protect my child’s spirit from any long-term effects of bullying. And please give me the wisdom to know when and how to talk about specific problems with my child’s teacher and/or others.
Amen.*
*"Amen” is a term traditionally used to affirm or confirm what has been said in prayer.
