When Your Child Is Wounded
Dealing Decisively with Bullies
1. Thankfully, we don’t have to
sit on the sidelines and let others bully our children. There are positive
ways you can work behind the scenes
and with your child to change the situation for good.
2. As a parent, it’s important to bring up the subject of bullying
with your son or daughter. Remember, most children don’t
know how to bring up the subject. Bob Smithouser outlines seven
things you should discuss with your child.
Brad Lewis presents four
ways you can support your child
if he or she is being bullied. It also might be helpful to tell one or
two stories to let
your child know
that many grown-ups were bullied as children.
3. You can teach your child important principles on
how to be a peacemaker. These principles will improve life for your
child at school.
Among the 12 principles outlined by Ken Sande, president of Peacemaker
Ministries:
- Conflict starts in the heart.
- The blame game makes conflict worse.
- It is never too late to start doing what’s right.
- Respectful communication is more likely to be heard.
4. If your child has a problem controlling his or her temper, it’s
important to teach discipline. How? Use eight great anger
busters outlined by Lynne Thompson. It may help to also discuss this
problem
with others.
5. You may want to tell your child what
the Bible has to say about bullying and let him or her know
that you will pray for him or her.
