When Your Child Is Wounded

Why Bullying Is So Harmful

1. Bullying is a problem that parents and educators alike have to address. Numerous studies on bullying have been conducted by and reported on by the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Northwest Regional Education Laboratory, the University of Colorado at Boulder Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence, the UCLA School Mental Health Project, and others. The bottom line: Our school-age children are at risk.

2. Any child can be at risk of being bullied. As a psychologist and former teacher, Dr. James Dobson addresses the problem of bullying at length in his book Bringing Up Boys. The statistics on bullying show how prevalent this problem is among children ages 8 and up. The reasons that children intimidate and harass one another vary, but the result is the same: A child’s spirit is wounded.

3. If your child is being repeatedly bullied, the time for action is now. In his book Complete Marriage and Family Home Reference Guide, Dr. Dobson addresses this issue head-on. His conclusion? School-age children can inflict long-term emotional damage on vulnerable classmates.

Thankfully, there’s hope!
