Why Boys Are So Different

Ideas When Your Boy Is Full of Energy

If your son has been extra rambunctious lately, find ways to constructively channel that energy over the next few days. You’ll be happier — and so will he!

PRESCHOOL

Risk-taking: Encourage your boy to meet a new person, try a new food, call a radio talk show (with your help), take a batch of cookies to a neighbor or tell a friend about something he learned in church.

High energy: Have your son lead an “exercise workout” for the rest of the family, give the car or the dog a bath, or make “music” with a pots-and-pans marching band.

ELEMENTARY

Competition: Stage contests to see who can set the table most quickly (without breaking anything), who can give the most compliments in a day to other family members, who can stay quiet the longest, or who can rhyme the most times with “porcupine.”

Boasting: Challenge your boy to create a family newsletter touting the accomplishments of everyone in your household (including pets, if you have any), to write and perform a theme song about the greatest thing he’s ever done (and how he felt), or to make a collage out of magazine pictures showing “Things I’ll Do When I’m 20.”
