The Good and the Bad of Organized Sports
Organized sports can be a positive way for children to expend physical energy. However, there can also be a negative side to team games.
The Good Kids get physical exercise and develop strength and coordination.
Kids learn lessons on healthy competition.
Self-esteem increases when kids feel good about their performance.
Kids learn how to work as a team and build friendships.
Coaches can act as positive adult role-models.
The Bad Parents and coaches can focus too much on winning.
Kids may base self-esteem on whether they win or lose.
Physical injuries can occur.
Kids can become distracted in school if overinvolved in sports.
Kids may have no time for other activities if overinvolved.
Whats a Parent to Do? Let your child choose which activity he will participate in.
Let your child choose when he will stop participating in a particular sport.
Allow your child to participate in only one sport at a time.
Praise your child for a job well-done whether he wins or loses.
Evaluate the coach. Does he put too much pressure on the kids? Is he a good role model?
