How to Shape Your Child’s Character

Character Brings Rewards

First I decided to teach my children some golden character traits. Then I created “gold nuggets” by balling up foil and spray painting them gold. When I caught my children showing one of the golden actions or attitudes, I gave them a gold nugget. We set up a system for our kids to redeem their nuggets. Here is a sample:

1 nugget = bubble gum from gumball machine
4 nuggets = dollar store purchase
6 nuggets = get to choose family night activity
8 nuggets = have a friend overnight
10 nuggets = special purchase/privilege for saving their nuggets.

Tips for Maintaining Parental Sanity:

  • Parent has to initiate reward of golden nugget.
  • If a child points out something he did to deserve a nugget, he is automatically refused one.
  • Each child has a separate collection of nuggets.
  • Redeemed nuggets are returned to main nugget container.
Note: Nuggets are a symbol of blessing, so in our home they cannot be taken away as punishment.
