Inside the Mind of a Child
Bright Babies
Infants are more “intelligent” than we realize. At birth their abilities may not be fully developed, but look at what they can do:
Vision: Newborns can see clearly approximately 10 to 12 inches away, about the distance between a nursing infant and his mother’s face. Fortunately, infants tend to be more interested in the human face than anything else. Take advantage of this and spend time gazing into your baby’s eyes. He will love it.
Hearing: Evidence exists that babies can hear a few months before they are born. Also, only days after their birth, they will turn in recognition of their mother’s voice. Babies prefer voices to any other sound and will especially perk up when you use “baby talk.”
Listening to the high-pitched and slow sounds of baby talk will eventually help your baby learn to talk.
Memory: Babies have good memories. They can remember something they learned weeks prior. For example, babies were taught to move a mobile by kicking their foot. Weeks later when placed in the same situation, these infants remembered how to get the mobile to move.
Also, your baby’s sense of smell, taste and touch are fully developed at birth.
